Lady Spindrift Returns

Hey everyone! In case you guys haven’t noticed, I am finally back to spin it up for the summer. Please pardon me for not updating my site for the past month or two. Things have been very difficult for me during those times. Due to a sudden family emergency, I decided to take a hiatus from mid-April to mid-May in order to focus on family related events. I am sure you all may remember the saying, “Family comes first.”

Putting family things aside, I really want to start off by giving a big shoutout to my fellow crew: The Audio Chemists. On Saturday, June 8, DMC Champion and X-Ecutioner Rob Swift will be coming to the Boston area to teach a master DJ class at the Paris Street Gallery (101 Paris Street, Everett, MA) from 1-3pm. Rob Swift will be covering major fundamentals of DJing and Turntablism, as well as give a story of his journey as both a DJ/Turntablist and Producer. A live set by Rob will be performed, followed by a meet and greet for attendees to ask him any questions. Additional information and signups can be found here at the Audio Chemists website. Do not miss out on this amazing event.

For all my LGBTQ folks in the Boston area, we only have less than a week until Pride 2013. Saturday night, I will be spinning up the hottest music for the Boston Pride 2013 Youth Dance. On top of that, this Youth Dance is going to become much bigger than the Valentine’s Day Youth Dance back in February. The Boston Pride 2013 Youth Dance will be located at Boston City Hall (1 City Hall Square, Boston, MA). Presale tickets are only $10 and will be $15 at the door. Additional information about the Youth Dance and Facebook invite can all be found here. For all those under 21 who want to celebrate Boston Pride 2013, you know that this is the place to be.

Featured guests include LGBTQ Advocate and Mentor David Wilson, as well as “Glee” cast member Alex Newell (who portrays “Wade ‘Unique’ Davis”).

This Saturday’s conference will have a total of 280-300 preregistered attendees and preregistration is already closed. For those interested in attending last minute, come thru early as possible, in case some seats are open due to those preregistered who cannot make it. Remember, seats are limited.

Happy St Patty’s day yesterday to many of you people out there getting your drink and dance on! Big ups to them and also a big thanks to Sterling Golden and all of the ZuZu/Middle East staff for helping me make this event possible.

New Month, New Day, New Beat

Happy Friday and Happy “1st of tha Month” (Bone Thugs reference)! The title is very self explanatory, of course: a new month, a new day, and I finally release a new beat. This is actually my very first beat to begin with. Since the beginning of 2013, I decided to engage in more studio work along with booking/working my live gigs in the process. This means I will be working on my own Edits, Remixes, and Producing my own beats, along with working to support local artists in the scene.

My very first beat is a homage paid to one of my favorite animes, Cowboy Bebop, and the fabulous soundtrack composer Yoko Kanno. Kanno-san was a prominent figure in building the soundtrack for this great anime. The sample used for this beat is “Car 24,” found in the Original Soundtrack album. It’s a very catchy track, I might say. Using Ableton Live, I have chopped and spliced the sample and layered it over a drum loop, with some hi-hats added. This beat is built with 3x 16-bar verses, the intro sample used as the hook, and worked to add in the bridge as well. I’m still working the basics of Ableton Live right now, but I’m looking forward to really build from scratch when the time comes.

This beat is uploaded to my SoundCloud page, and is downloadable for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!

“Car 24” © Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts, 1998

Cowboy Bebop © Shinichiro Watanabe, 1998

Welcome to the new site!

Hello everyone and welcome to the new website to yours truly, DJ Lady Spindrift. January had been quite a busy month in terms of preparations for the year 2013 (projects, promotion, gigs, etc). But finally, I make this official to everyone, new faces and familiar ones.

My goals for 2013 include working on my own blends/edits/remixes, as well as moving towards the production phase (beat making), all while working on booking gigs for this year. Alongside of my production goals, I am looking forward to working with and supporting local artists, DJs, and making my move in continuing to contribute to the Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) community. I strongly feel that this year, I need to make my move in expanding my DJing even further. I decided to make plans in booking gigs outside of the Boston area and venture towards my home state New Hampshire and other prominent cities such as New York, New Haven, Philadelphia, and so on. This means, I will be working on a ton of networking with new faces in the process. So stay tuned for that.

I want to give a gigantic thanks to Matt Yezuita/VirgoAscendant, who has been putting in a ton of hard work on my website, as well as my new DJ logos and business cards. Without him, this all would not be possible. I also want to give a big thanks to friends, family, and people who have enjoyed my sets and my performances up to now. You guys always give me the motivation to help continue doing one of the things I love in my life. It is time to aim higher and higher, especially for 2013.
